Llewellyn Barrow Obituary

On Sunday, November 26, 2023, Llewellyn Barrow departed this earthly life for heavenly reward. Llewellyn was born to the late Frank Barrow and Julia Coleman Barrow on March 29,1943, in Chattanooga, TN. The first of two sons, Llewellyn was easy-going, kind, and generous with a passion for education.

On December 10, 1966, he married his college sweetheart, the love of his life, Mary Alice Ringer Barrow. This union of 56 beautiful years was blessed with two children, Charita Lynn Barrow and Brian Lamar Barrow.

Llewellyn attended West Main Street Elementary, Second District Junior High School, and graduated from Howard High School in 1961.  In 1966, he earned both a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Education at Tennessee State University.

Throughout his life, Llewellyn held many titles, but his favorite roles were that of husband and father.  He was always present, beaming with pride, for every game, recital, and important milestone.  He also valiantly and selflessly cared for and supported his family during every illness and difficult moment.

Llewellyn enjoyed a successful professional career as a school psychologist for the Chattanooga School System. Later in his career, he was promoted to the Director of Resource Services for the school system and was responsible for leading and managing the school system’s psychologists, guidance counselors, social workers and systemwide testing.

Service to the community was also an important facet of his life. Llewellyn joined the Rho Psi chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in 1966 and served as the president of the Kappa Iota chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity from 1981 to 1983. He was also treasurer of the Carateers and a graduate of the third class of Leadership Chattanooga in 1987.

Llewellyn embraced Christianity at an early age and was christened at Wiley Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a member.  He later joined Bethel AME Church and then Second Missionary Baptist Church.

He will be remembered for his love and compassion to both family and friends, his unfailing work ethic, his infectious smile, and his two favorite sayings: “You do what you have to do” and “Save and invest your money.”

Llewellyn was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ringer Barrow.

His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his children, Charita Lynn Barrow; Brian Lamar Barrow (Emily); brother Joseph Barrow (Ruth), granddaughter, Ada Marie Barrow, sisters-in-law Velma Ringer Jackson (Reginald), Thelma Ringer Smith, Willena Ringer Isom Cameron (James); brothers-in-law, Howard Edward Ringer Sr. (Olivia), Windon Ringer (Carole); dear friend, Lynda McCowan, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Funeral service will be Saturday, December 2, 2023, at Second Missionary Baptist Church 2305 E. 3rd St at 11:30 AM with visitation one hour prior to the service.
