Herman Jackson departed from this earthly life to heavenly reward on Thursday, August 10, 2023. Herman was born in Carrollton, Georgia as the third child of Cleophus Jackson and Eula Mae Ringer Jackson. At an early age, the family relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Herman received his formal education from Chattanooga Public Schools graduating from the Howard High School in the class of 1961.
Reared in a Christian home under the influences of his parents, aunts, and uncles. He was raised up and met the Lord with his family and close friends at the Pure Holiness Church of God. He later joined his wife and children and was baptized at Westside Missionary Baptist Church.
Herman was introduced to the field of barbering by his father and began cutting hair as a teen from his parents back porch in the Alton Park community. Upon graduating from high school and completing barber college in Atlanta, Georgia, he received his barber license in 1962 from the State of Tennessee as a Master Barber. He was the owner and proprietor of Jackson’s Barber Shop located in the East Chattanooga Community and enjoyed a successful career spanning over 60 years receiving recognition as a trailblazer in the local African American business community in his craft by several organizations.
An entrepreneur by nature, Herman expanded his passion for sports and travel to create a successful travel club with the support of a few trusted friends that spanned over 30 years consisting of cruises, bus and train travel, sporting events and other excursions. He is widely known for his annual “Essence Festival” tours which enjoyed large notoriety within the Chattanooga community.
Among those who preceded him in death include his parents, Cleophus and Eula Mae Jackson; brothers, Arthur L. Jackson, Clarence W. Jackson and Thomas L. Jackson; sisters, Ada Pearl Patterson and Romell J. (Lee) Dawson.
Herman leaves to forever cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Sherrie R. Johnson Jackson; three daughters who were his princesses, Vanessa Angela Jackson, Yolanda J. Jackson, Antioch, TN and Reinza Jackson (Calvin) Woods; one grandson-his heart beat, Jordan K. Richardson, Antioch TN; aunt, Viola Ringer, Cincinnati, OH; brother in-laws, George Patterson, Deon Johnson and Richard E. Johnson; sister in-law Sylvia Jackson, Shirley Jackson, Austell, GA, Kenover A. Jackson, Indianapolis, IN; nephews, Anthony Twain (Deetra) Dawson, Michael (Romeika) Jackson, Antioch, TN; nieces, Greta (Michael) Long, Valerie Patterson, Detrice (Thomas) Bell, Murfreesboro TN, Constance Jackson, Ameila Jackson Tatum, Atlanta,GA, Lekesha Bryd, Raleigh, NC, Eulisa Jackson (Bobby) Waites, Douglassville, GA, Victoria Jackson (Brian) Dinkins, Indianapolis IN and Jocelyn Jackson Miami, FL; special cousins from the Ringer family for which he held a sibling bond; a host of remaining loving cousins, nieces, nephews, the Johnson and Cotton families, cherished friends, Jackson Tours Group Family and faithful former customers.
The family visitation will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Westside Missionary Baptist Church, Chattanooga Tennessee from 5:00-7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, August 18 at 12:00 noon at Westside Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor George Maize officiating.
In addition to accepting floral expressions, the family is establishing the Herman Jackson Memorial Scholarship for Aspiring Barbers in his honor. Contributions can be made payable to RISE Chattanooga.
