Ethel was an LPN and a private-duty nurse for 17 years, received a B.A. in 1981 from Chicago State University in social work, and became a nurse social worker for Cook County and the Illinois Department of Public Aid for 24 years until she retired to care for her mother who was very ill. She was actively involved at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Chicago, Illinois, as a lecture reader and choir member. She had a passion for painting ceramics. Ethel was a great cook, and some of her culinary specialties were bread pudding, gingerbread, and red beans andrice. Ethel also was a wonderful caregiver. She would travel to whatever city her sick loved one was to take care of them. Ethel loved to fish and cook and eat the fish she caught. Blue Gills were her favorite! Ethel was a wonderful seamstress. She would sew and wear her own fashionable clothing when she was young. Ethel knitted and crocheted. Ethel was also known as a prayer warrior. She would pray for strangers, friends, and family alike anywhere, anytime, any place. She was captain of her high school basketball team and one year was high school queen. Ethel attended Mount Peria Baptist Church and was a member of the Missionary Society where she would occasionally bring some words of encouragement to the group. She was also a volunteer at Christ's Chapel in Ringgold for several years.
